Wave FM’s Mission Statement
To support the Tourist industry in Portland, to sponsor and conduct activities in conjunction with other organizations and bodies to advance tourism in the Portland District.
Portland Wave 87.6 FM holds a Broadcasting licence covering the town of Portland with a FM signal.
Its focus is to engage with the tourist using a radio format of 60s to 90s Music, Portland History and to promote Tourist Activities and services common to visitor’s needs.
To Support sole traders with a low-cost radio advertising.
To engage with the listeners to help develop and refine the wave on air format.
Development of Wave
What is the psychology behind wave?
We are attempt to mimic the style and radio format of the great days when AM radio was king and when the music was designed for the radio technology of the times.
All tracks are mono and play between 1 Min 30 seconds to 3 Min 30 seconds which was the accepted standard of the time.
We play 2 to 4 tracks back to back depending upon the amount of voice traffic required for programming.
Wave format is designed as background music for home, shop or car usage, you can listen and do other tasks as well.
Broadcast Regulations require us to follow a set of criteria or we lose our licence.
- We must broadcast to a specific audience we have chosen tourist industry in Portland.
- We must not copy or sound like a commercial or community radio formats, we play 66 Local History stories from 1885 to 1900 and 36 local tourist attractions spots which cycle through the format.
- We can only operate on 1 watt of power, that is why you can only hear wave in Portland.
